Barry M. Goldwater Bombing Range Tour

Last Thursday, Forrest and I were invited out on a tour of the Barry M. Goldwater Range. We were taken out to Range 1 just to the north of Ajo and got to watch some F-16s and A-10s do some practice bombing and strafing runs.

I wasn’t quite fast enough with the camera, but I did barely capture this shot of the F-16’s afterburner.

Beyond the tower for Range 1 is the road to some of the Barry M. Goldwater tactical ranges. The range is closed to the public (except for a few small areas) so this is off limits.

After the speed of the F-16s, the A-10s threatened to be a bit of a disappointment, however it was still really amazing to see them up so close! (And it’s a bit easier to take pictures of them!)

  1. Would like info. on how to contact the range operations people who work at the Gila Bend AFAF site. I lived and worked on the small “base” that services the various sectors of the range. At the time I was stationed there (1979-1980) the base facility itself as well as those out on the various ranges were active duty Air Force personnel. I lived in the base housing provided by the A.F., as did most of the rest of us. I understand that most, if not all, range jobs have been turned over to civilian contractors. I’m interested in one of the jobs. I served 7 years active duty A.F., then 23 years as a civilian police officer for a city in the Denver Metro area…which I’ve since retired from. So…..I’m hoping you might be able to provide me with some contact info. to whom I could inquire about a civilian contractor job at the Gila Bend AFAF Range Facility.

Thank you very much in advance for any assistance you can provide.

    1. You’ve got me on that. It’s been a couple of years since I was down there and I found out about the tour through some acquaintances so I didn’t have a specific contact. Sorry!
