Meet the Lifted Scamp

As with most older Scamps, the original torsion axle was worn out leaving the poor trailer practically on the ground. Even with a new torsion axle it would only sit about 4″ higher. Fortunately, Forrest is a fabricator and was going make this a 4×4 Scamp anyways. So out came the torch!

Using a new 2000 pound leaf spring axle assembly, a new sub-frame assembly, and some matching Jeep wheels, Forrest drew up his plans. The result is really quite amazing: the Scamp sits over a foot higher and tows along behind the Jeep like a dream. Even over large rocks!

  1. Hey Guys! Google just led me to your page – your Scamp looks awesome! I have a ’75 Trillium camper and would love to do this kind of lift and put bigger tires on it. I was wondering if you could give me any info on how you did this (what kind of axle, suspension, etc you used) and how you like it now! We live in Colorado so are taking the camper up dirt roads and would love to get a smoother ride. Would love to hear from you! Thanks!

    1. Where in Colorado do you live? We’ll be back in the San Juans for good by mid-August! Anyway, like we said in the post, we bought a 2000 pound leaf spring axle assembly and Forrest welded up the necessary spring perches to install the axle. It required a bit of fabrication but he eventually got it right. The Scamp frame is a little light duty for towing down gravel roads and would require beefing up to hold up to us. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have a place to move the adorable thing onto a different frame last spring so we sold it. Eventually, we’ll give another Scamp a shot. I loved it!
